The effect of Jair Balsonaro's time as president of Brazil since his inauguration in January 2019, a period that has had a profound effect on the country and the rest of the world. An early decree introduced a radical liberalisation of gun laws, and he also signalled that he would continue the homophobic rhetoric that had proved so electorally successful. He then turned to the development and exploitation of the Amazon, slashing the budgets of environmental and indigenous protection agencies.
