How a 1938 radio production of HG Wells's 'War of the Worlds' triggered panic across the US, plus the fallout from the Sunday Times's publication of bogus Hitler diaries. Over a million radio listeners panic thinking the nation was being attacked by Martians in Orson Welles' 'War Of The Worlds' and one of the world's most venerable newspapers falls for the fake diaries of Adolf Hitler, causing media chaos in 1983. On April 24, 1983, The Sunday Times went to press with its biggest-ever scoop, the previously unseen and unknown diaries of Adolf Hitler. Bad idea because these documents were fake. Careers were destroyed and reputations ruined by one of the most reckless gambles in the history of journalism.
