History in the Making is a documentary series that reveals the addictive and endlessly entertaining process of making historically significant item using the original, time-honored methods. Across the nation and around the world, there are craftsmen who are creating unique items using the same methods from decades, centuries, even millennia in the past. This growing number of experts are producing handcrafted goods which are astonishingly beautiful, tough as nails and coveted the world over. The process of watching them work is not just fascinating it also gives us a dynamic, living glimpse back in time to see how some of the most significant items in history were made. On the one hand, implements of war such as old armor or imposing swords are reproduced in detail. But also civilian achievements such as the first printing presses or an ancient beer product are meticulously reconstructed. Each episode introduces three different products of the past - while also focusing on the trades that have shaped the present as we know it through their craft activities. In each 30-minute episode, History in the Making will vividly present the process – using the original techniques – in the recreation of three items a tool, a weapon, a machine or a vehicle of historical importance. Traditional craftspeople make a historically correct crossbow, weave textiles with early industrial machines and restore the original model of telephone. The crossbow was one of the deadliest weapons in the Middle Ages. Maryellen Burdenwood has made it her life's mission to make crossbows with historical accuracy. Feared and loved at the same time In the military conflicts of the Middle Ages, the crossbow was an effective weapon that was used in countless battles. With a range of almost 300 meters, the pointed crossbow projectiles were even able to pierce heavy armor. The deadly penetrating power was not only famous, but above all notorious. Today Maryellen Burdenwood shows how to make a 15th century crossbow. Also in this episode weaving fabrics like in the days of industrialization and old telephones shine in new splendor. We meet Rabbit Goody who weaves fabrics with machines he salvaged from old textile factories. Finally, Jamie Emerton shows how to restore an old Bell telephone.
