Children on the Frontline The Escape

Two years ago Marcel Mettelsiefen made a documentary about one family living in Aleppo. It was the kind of film that makes an old news story – the woes of the civil war in Syria – real, human and piercingly sad. Quite rightly, it went on to win any number of awards including two Baftas.

Here Mettelsiefen picks up the same family’s story, and we meet again the eloquent, mischievous daughters of Abu Ali, commander of the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo. We see their life in a once middle-class suburb full of ruined houses as they throw rubble at a broken basketball hoop or create a make-shift classroom. But then, their father is seized by Isis and the emotional blows keep raining down on the family as they join the flood of refugees seeking a better life in Europe. What follows is extraordinary.
