Discovery Channel - The Unfolding Universe (HDTV) (2002)

Uncover clues about the origins of our galaxy with a team of astronomers and scientists as they strive to locate a strange presence hidden deep in the core of the galaxy. Learn how this mysterious realm harbors clues to the origin of the world and probes the future course of our galaxy and universe. The Milky Way contains more than 200 billion stars and a seemingly infinite number of planets. Where did our magnificent galaxy come from and what will become of it? Astronomers have charted remarkable changes in the Milky Way in just the past century, no more than a cosmic microsecond. Millions of stars, like our own Sun, have been devoured by a monstrous galactic void. Discovery Channel follows a group of leading astronomers and scientists as they attempt to unlock the mysteries of this insatiable vortex. They don't know what they’ll find there…only that this hellish realm harbours clues to the fate of our galaxy. Viewers will get a glimpse of stunning simulations computed by scientists with the National Computational Science Alliance and turned into digital animations by visualization artists and programmers at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois. Included is a spectacular rendition of a flight from earth to the massive black hole at the center of the galaxy.
