Smithsonian Channel - The Real Jesus of Nazareth (2017) Part 2 The Ministry Begins

Follow actor Robert Powell on a journey across the Holy Land as he explores the life of the religious icon whose role he nailed 40 years ago. Robert Powell portrayed Jesus Christ in the Emmy-nominated 1977 miniseries “Jesus of Nazareth” and now, decades later, he takes a journey through modern Israel in an attempt to reconstruct the story of the man who changed history. Guided by the Gospels and the latest archaeological and historical research, Powell travels to Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt. While there, he meets archaeologists and scholars who help him on his quest to learn more about Jesus. This limited series intersperses footage from the miniseries with Powell's current-day excursion to illustrate how the Holy Land has changed over the course of 40 years as the actor seeks clues to the real historical figure who inspired Christianity. More than just a tale of history and archeology, Robert will be using his unique gifts as an actor to build a picture of the character of Jesus, speculating on this remarkable figure, while always being guided with the most rigorous contemporary academic research. With the help of scholars and theologians, he will examine Jesus' s lost adolescent years, the start and growth of his ministry, and his death and believed resurrection, which would spark the birth of one of the largest religions on the planet.

Follow us to Mount Precipice, the River Jordan, and Jerusalem as we investigate the start of Jesus's ministry. Learn how he built a following with his words, charisma, and miracles and developed his radical message of the coming apocalypse. THE MINISTRY BEGINS highlights Jesus' baptism by John the Baptist, the first event in Jesus' life that is reported in all four gospels. Powell looks to uncover how Jesus might have developed the message – radical for its time – that would form the basis of the future Christian religion. Powell travels into the Judaean desert where Jesus fasted for 40 days, and then follows the ancient routes to Galilee where Jesus taught after his exile from Nazareth.

Snippet from Wikipedia: Jesus of Nazareth (TV series)

Jesus of Nazareth (Italian: Gesù di Nazareth) is a 1977 epic television drama serial directed by Franco Zeffirelli and co-written by Anthony Burgess and Suso Cecchi d'Amico, which dramatizes the birth, life, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. It stars Robert Powell as Jesus, and features an all-star ensemble cast of renowned actors, including eight who had won or would go on to win Academy Awards: Anne Bancroft, Ernest Borgnine, Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Anthony Quinn, Rod Steiger, James Earl Jones and Peter Ustinov.

Some scenes were added during the writing process, with some characters (such as Zerah) added for brevity or dramatic effect. Jesus of Nazareth depicts Judas Iscariot as initially well-intentioned, but later as a selfish dupe of Zerah's who betrays Jesus largely as a result of Zerah's false platitudes and pretexts. However, in accordance with the Gospels, the film depicts Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea as sympathetic members of the Sanhedrin. Many of the miracles of Jesus, such as the changing of water into wine at the wedding at Cana, the transfiguration, and the calming of the storm, are not shown, although Jesus's healing of Jairus's daughter, healing the centurion's servant, the blind man and the crippled woman on the Sabbath, the feeding of the multitude, and the raising of Lazarus from the dead are presented.

Jesus of Nazareth premiered on 27 March 1977, on the Italian channel Rai 1, and was first aired in the United Kingdom, on 3 April 1977, on the ITV Network. It was a huge ratings success and received acclaim, with particular praise for Powell's portrayal of Jesus.

Plot summary

The narrative of Jesus of Nazareth is a kind of cinematic Diatessaron, or Gospel harmony, blending all four New Testament accounts. It presents Jesus as both God and man.
