One of Britain's best loved model-making companies, home to four iconic brands, Hornby, Airfix, Scalextric and Corgi, opens its doors to reveal how their dedicated team of designers strive to shrink a new generation of mighty machines. There are ups and downs throughout the design process as they attempt to get the all- important detail spot on, whether it's perfecting the sound of a 1930's steam loco or the stitching on a First World War fighter plane.

Ch1. Merchant Navy

A perfect diecast replica of a 1940's Merchant Navy steam locomotive is the task for Hornby's design team.

Ch2. Bristol Fighter

Designer Carl has a challenge on his hands attempting to recreate a First World War biplane as a 1/48th scale Corgi model.

Ch3. Churchill's Funeral Wagon

Designer Sam creates a model of Winston Churchill's funeral wagon and first-time modeller Simon builds Britain's biggest model railway layout from his memory.

Ch4. APT

Pete Waterman is commissioned by Chester Cathedral to construct a monster layout in tribute to the unsung 19th-century railway builder Thomas Brassey.

Ch5. Spitfire

Designer Paramjit takes on the challenge of building a new version of the iconic RAF fighter of World War II, the Spitfire.

Ch6. Mosquito

After visiting an original Mosquito at the de Havilland aircraft museum, Airfix designer Paramjit attempts to shrink the wooden wonder to 172 scale.

Ch7. Intercity 125

The Intercity 125 gets an overhaul and the pressure is on to design two quick build models of the Ford Mustang in time for the summer holiday.

Ch8. Vampire

Young designer Tom has his work cut out creating a new model of the record-breaking British jet the Vampire with its unusual space age look.

Ch9. P2

The Hornby team race to complete a model of the giant P2, The Prince of Wales locomotive, determined to be the first to bring a model of this giant to market.

Ch10. Formula E

Hornby's Scalextric team attempt to tap into the brand's glory years, the 1980's, and devise a plan to create a model of a classic supercar, the Lamborghini Countach.
